United Way wants you to volunteer!

You can volunteer and make a difference in your community. The listings below are a small sample of the more than 500 volunteer needs from more than 200 agencies you can find on-line at www.unitedwaycc.org. If you do not have computer access, or would like information about the volunteer opportunities below, call us at 802-860-1677 Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. A number of local agencies are planning special events during September and need volunteers to help make their efforts a success: Burlington City Arts: Create a team for the Dance Dance Marathon in Burlingtons City Hall Park or volunteer to help staff the event. Sept. 13, shifts between 2 p.m. and midnight. Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity: Volunteer for the Franklin Grand Isle Chapter 3rd annual Bike/Walk-a-Thon in St. Albans on Sat., Sept. 13 from 8 a.m-5 p.m. Volunteers will staff refreshment stands and help participants cross the highway. American Lung Association: The Healthy Air Walk needs volunteers to become team captains, serve as crossing guards, and clean up after the event. T-shift and breakfast provided. Sept. 20, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Boys and Girls Club of Burlington: Volunteers for Day 4 Kids Back-to-school Festival will move band equipment, help with the BBQ (and See UNITED WAY, page 11 United Way From page 1 enjoy the food!), and clean up. Sept. 20, noon-5 p.m. ROAD TO RECOVERYThe American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers, age 18 and older, to transport cancer patients in Chittenden and Franklin Counties to their life-saving treatment. Drivers must have a valid drivers license, a safe driving record and the minimum required liability insurance. Flexible daytime scheduling. The Road to Recovery program also needs a Coordinator to oversee requests for transportation, recruit volunteer drivers, and schedule rides for patients. Flexible, about 2 hours per week. SADDLE UPCHAMP (Champlain Adaptive Mounted Program) provides riding lessons to individuals with special needs. Volunteers are needed to groom horses, lead horses, be a side-walker with the rider, keep records, and help with fund-raising. Training programs will take place Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. 2 hour shifts, starting Sept. 22. INSURANCE COUNSELINGChamplain Valley Agency on Aging needs volunteers to provide health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries who are choosing and enrolling in the Part D Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers help seniors compare plans, process enrollments, make referrals, etc. Flexible schedule, 6 hours per week from Nov. 15Dec. 31. Training provided and a minimum six-month commitment is requested. TAKE A WALK!Vermont Department of Health, Office of Local Health is seeking volunteers to coordinate weekly neighborhood walking groups. Volunteers recruit walkers, choose a weekly day and time and create a 20-30 minute walking route. Resource materials and help with promotion provided.
