Otters blank Raiders in season opener

VERMONT Even though they out shot the Rutland Raiders 8-3 in the first half, and held 5-2 advantage in penalty corners, the Otter Valley Otters couldnt beat Raider goalie Sarah May in the field hockey season opener for both teams Aug. 27. Despite their domination, O.V. found itself in a scoreless tie with Rutland in the first half. Then with just over a minute gone in the second half junior forward Shayna McDonough Tapped in a crossing pass from Emily Waldrip to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. From that point on Jordan Thomas and the Otter Valley defense brought the win home and it was the Raiders turn to be frustrated. Rutland took control of the game after the McDonough goal, but like the Otters in the first half, couldnt finish by putting the ball in the net, as the Otters held on to claim the 1-0 win. The Middlebury Tigers opened their 2008 campaign the same day, and like the Otters came out on top. After falling behind 1-0 early Sara Higgins scored twice in the first half and Middlebury held on to defeat Mount Mansfield 2-1. Shelby Laframboise and Megan Laframboise contributed an assist each to the win, while Tiger goalie Casey ODonahue preserved the victory with each of her ten saves. Meagan Oliver scored the lone goal for the 0-1 Cougars, while their goalie Jen Haley kept it close with a dozen saves. On Aug. 27 in Poultney, Whitney Van Buren had a goal and four assists to lead her Blue Devils past MSJ 5-1 in the girls soccer season opener for both teams. Amber Ondria led the victors in goals with two, while Katie Moyer contributed a goal and an assist. Laura Lyle also scored a goal to round out Poultneys scoring. Cassie Decker (four saves) and (15 saves) shared net duty for the Blue Devils. Briana Patten Scored the lone goal for the 0-1 Mounties. The Fair Haven Slaters opened up their season on the same night, and like Poultney they started it with a win. Playing the Bellows Falls Terriers in the first round of the John Werner Tournament in Arlington, the Slaters broke a 1-1 tie when Jenna Charron nailed a penalty kick with twelve minutes left to play in the game. Despite further opportunities that arose for both teams, neither would score and Fair Haven held on to claim the 2-1 win. Ali Mancuso gave the Slaters a 1-0 halftime lead with a first half goal, but Bellows falls would tie it early in the second half with a goal from Sydney Dorr, setting the stage for Charrons game winner. Tia Bilodeau made nine saves in the net for the 0-1 Terriers, while the Slaters goalie Megan Wooster secured the win with a dozen saves. Proctor too opened their season on August 27th but unlike the Blue Devils or Slaters they wouldnt emerge victorious. In Proctor Daley Crowley scored twice to lead her Rochester Rockets to 4-2 win over the Phantoms. Abby Hill and Danielle Mishkit also added a goal each for the victorious Rockets. Mikayla McCormack and Tori Scarzello scored for the 0-1 Phantoms.
