L.C. Chamber Music Fest is a showcase

On Wednesday night, Aug. 27, the Elley-Long Music Center had St. Michael's College was almost filled to capacity by music lovers who had come to hear a concert given by Soovin Kim, the brilliant young violinist. Kim has ties to Lake Champlain and he plans to collect some of his friends to make music with them when the actual the first seven-day festival takes place Aug. 20-30, 2009. In the meantime, we were given a foretaste of the quality of the music making, rather like being tasted on a banquet meal comprised of dishes chosen by the chef before the menu is settled. In this case, the operational word for the evening was 'exquisite' that Webster's Collegiate 10th Edition, on page 411, the left-hand column, defines as follows: 1: 'carefully selected : choice': The programming was a very thoughtful mixing the familiar (Massenet's El_e) with the more esoteric (Bart__ Contrasts for clarinet, violin and piano, Sz. 111). 3 a : 'marked by a flawless craftsmanship or by beautiful, ingenious, delicate, or even average execution': The execution of the program did indeed approach the flawless, and the execution of the music was uniformly beautiful (clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois had the most voluptuous of tones throughout the program, none lovelier than those in her first entrance in the Schubert Der Hirt auf dem Felsen), ingenious (the music of the Bart__ontrasts and the performance thereof by Guise-Langlois, Kim and Jeewon Park), delicate (the singing of Hyunah Yu, soprano, in this Schubert), but never average. b : marked by nice discrimination (the playing of Kim and violist Hsin-Yun Huang in the Mozart Duo for violin and viola in B-flat Major), deep sensitivity (Huang and Park in the Brahms Sonata for viola and piano in f minor, op. 120, no. 1), or subtle understanding' (the playing of the Bart__ c : 'accomplished, perfected': the entire program bespoke settled communications between and among the players in any given piece. It is obvious that there is musical respect in abundance that came into play with these musicians and gave us such consistent perfection of tone and an interplay in the music that was miraculous. 4 a : 'pleasing through beauty, fitness, or perfection'; That there was beauty in abundance and perfection to burn, since all the performers gave evidence of great technical abilities, cannot be denied. There was a certain fitness also in the choice of music to be presented and the musicians chosen to be invited to perform the music that was chosen. I feel strongly that Kim made those choices, and he is to be applauded for making such musical choices. b : acute, intense': the playing of the Brahms was intense for a certainty, as was the Bart__but there are different grades of intensity, and there was no piece throughout the program that was not compelling in the execution of its musical thought. c ; 'having uncommon or an esoteric appeal': The program itself was somewhat uncommon, and the level of musicianship was about as high as one could reasonably expect in any concert hall throughout the world. With performers like these, not the least of whom is Soovin Kim, the LCCMF, scheduled for next August has the potential for being exquisite. Although it is clear that Kim is following to a degree the performance practices of Marlboro he has said that they would get together as musicians to rehearse music, and those works which seemed most ready to present to an audience would be performed at concerts where the public was invited to come that is a plus. Although it is not clear exactly how many public concerts there will be during the seven-day festival, I am certain that whatever the number they present to the public will be well worth the hearing. Bon voyage! Speaking solely for myself, I hope the year flies swiftly. Burlington resident Dan Wolfe observes and critiques the local arts scene for the Times Sentinel. His column appears weekly.
