MIDDLEBURYVermont Sun Fitness Center will celebrate the end of summer with the Vermont Sun Kids Triathlon. The Sunday, Sept. 7, event for children ages 7-14 is co-sponsored by the Middlebury Rec. Department. Individuals and teams of two or three complete one of two distances. Seven to ten year olds swim 100 yards in the Vermont Sun pool, bike three miles on Exchange Street, and run .6 miles. Eleven to 14 year olds do double that (200 yard swim, 6 mile bike, and 1.2 mile run). In recognition of support from the Salisbury and Leicester communities of the Vermont Sun Triathlon Series, kids from both the Salisbury Community and Leicester Central Schools may race free of charge. The triathlons start time is 12:00 PM. Each entrant will receive a triathlon T-shirt, a custom medal, Vermont Sun water bottle, Clif Bar, and an official race number for a 15 dollar entry fee. Registration is at Vermont Sun on, or before Friday, Sept. 5. Racers parents are asked to pitch in and help monitor the course on Exchange Street. Participants should arrive at Vermont Sun by 11:30 on Sunday, Sept. 7. We hope these fun, low-key local races will help inspire kids to stay active this summer, riding their bikes, running around, and swimming in lakes and pools. These are things that naturally keep kids fit and are much better choices than all the electronic games, and video temptations, said race director Steve Hare. For more information call 802-388-6888.
