World War II veteran remembered

BRANDON Fromer Brandon resident William J.McDermott, age 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Rhode Island. He was the husband of Ruth Ginny (Madden) McDermott for 57 years. McDermott was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater during the darkest days of World War II. He participated in combat operations at Betto Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Marianas Islands, Tinian, and others. McDermott was a sales service director for Speidel Jewelry for 24 years before retiring in 1992. He attended Yale University, Boston University and Boston College Law. At age 70 he passed the CPA exam and became an accountant. He was buried, with full military honors, at Forest Chapel Cemetery in East Providence, R.I.
