EMS squad celebrates new facility

LEWIS After five years of planning and construction, the Elizabethtown-Lewis EMS squad opened the doors of its new facility in celebratory fashion. The volunteer squad held an Open House Sept. 28 at the new building, located along Route 9 between the two hamlets. Squad president Patty Bashaw said the new station should help improve response time. The location is not only more central between both communities, but its direct access to the state highway means ambulances can get to where they need to go more easily. The previous location on Fox Run Road often involved slower travel through residential areas and turns at busy intersections. The new facility nearly triples the amount of space available for the company, Bashaw said. At their previous station ambulances would have to be pulled out of the bays to make space for meetings. The new station, however, includes a 936 square foot room to be used as an office, meeting room, kitchen, and storage area. There is also a spacious garage to house the squads two ambulances. The community has been super supportive, said Bashaw, noting that donations and volunteered services were instrumental for the new building. A $45,000 member item requested by Senator Elizabeth Little was crucial in moving the project forward, she said. Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, also a big supporter of the project, was on hand at the event to mark the facilitys opening. Bashaw presented plaques to several of the volunteers who contributed to the construction of the building. Squad member Charlie Martin recounted how the initial structure, built by Morton Builders, was completed in January. If you looked at it from the outside, it looked like it was done, said Martin. But when you walked in, there was a dirt floor and no walls. From there, he said, volunteers did virtually all the interior work, installing electrical wiring, a heating system, and other fixtures. Its fantastic, said Don Huntley, a charter member of the Elizabethtown-Lewis squad who also lent a hand in constructing the new facility. This is a great crew and they deserve it.
