Artists receive honors at Adirondack Museum's 21st annual Rustic Fair

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE Nearly 60 talented rustic artisans from across the United States and Canada gathered at the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, for the 21st Annual Rustic Fair on Sept. 5-7, 2008. This year, the Rustic Fair honors were the Maker's and People's Choice awards. Each award is determined by ballot: the rustic artisans, or "makers" select outstanding work by a peer; Rustic Fair visitors - nearly 3,000 this year - chose the winner of the People's Choice certificate. Brad Greenwood of Greenwood Designs, Beckwourth, California, received the Maker's Choice Award for his "Northwood's Desk." For the past twenty-one years Greenwood has been sharpening his skills as a furniture maker and designer. His work with unique and slab cut hard woods epitomizes his love for natural design. Desiring to use the most interesting and finest hard woods available in the West, Greenwood handpicks all of his wood. Brad's forte is his ability to create exceptional heirloom-quality furniture that combines natural form with classic design concepts. This is the second year that Greenwood has exhibited at the Adirondack Museum's Rustic Fair. Examples of Greenwood's work can be found on his website at www.greenwooddesigns.net. Don Moss, of Don Moss Rustic, West Hartford, Connecticut, received the People's Choice Award for his "Ice Table." Moss's work is inspired by the rustic furniture of the Adirondack tradition, a movement that started in the late 1800's in northern New York State with local artisans who used branches, roots, twigs, bark and antlers to build unique furniture for their wealthy "camp" owner patrons. His furniture is built with birch logs, branches, and stones collected from rivers and beaches. Moss uses naturally beautiful materials to bring the outdoors into the home. Moss has been exhibiting and selling his work at the Adirondack Museum's Annual Rustic Fair since 2004. See some of Don's rustic furniture by visiting his website at www.donmossrustic.com.
