Churches unite to offer free Thanksgiving dinners to public

MOOERS FORKS Barbara and Richard Bushey are thankful for all they have in their lives, and they prefer to spend their Thanksgiving Day brightening up the lives of others. Three years ago, Barbara had the idea of putting together a Thanksgiving feast free of charge at St. Annes Church, where shes a parishioner and member of the Ladies of St. Annes. Mooers Wesleyan Church and Mooers United Methodist Church joined in to assist where they could. We just felt like doing something to help everybody out that couldnt afford a turkey dinner, explained Barbara. Theres so many senior citizens and people who are just by themselves. And, we just wanted to make it something special for them. Donations for this years dinner are already pouring in, and the Busheys have even had people drop off cans of food on their porch. All we do is cook the food and I kind of organize it, explained Barbara. Everything else, its all donated. Its really nice. After Barbara receives all the food she needs, whatever money and canned food is left over goes to the food shelf. Rev. [John] Gillette (of Mooers Wesleyan Church) or Pastor Al Johnson (of Mooers UMC), they get it and distribute it to families, said Barbara. They make sure they get enough food for the winter. Theres so many jobs disappearing in this area, said Richard. People have a hard time. Some of these people are just making over minimum wage. Because of the economic situation, the Busheys are anticipating an increase in people attending the annual dinner. To make things a little easier on people, the Busheys also have volunteers deliver food to those who cannot come out to the church, or go to peoples homes to pick them up. If they decide at the last moment [they want to attend], thats fine, said Barbara. It doesnt make a difference. Well have plenty [of food]. The dinner will be held Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. If interested in donating food or money, or volunteering, contact Barbara at 236-5421 or St. Annes Church at 236-5632. On the day of the event, if interested in a ride to the church or for delivery or take-out, call 236-6118.
