Keene man killed in hunting accident

KEENE A 35-year-old man was killed Nov. 15, the victim of an apparent hunting accident. According to State Police, Leo J. Hickey was hunting with a group of friends near Lacy Road in Keene when he was shot in the head by a member of his own hunting party. Michael M. Smith, age 43, of Lake Placid apparently fired at what he thought was a deer when he struck Hickey before 10 a.m. last Saturday. Essex County Coroner Paul Connery pronounced Hickey dead at the scene and authorized the bodys removal to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. The official cause of death is yet to be released, pending an autopsy. Further investigation into Smith revealed a warrant out for his arrest in New Hampshire on felony drug charges. District Attorney Julie Garcia said Smith will be extradited to New Hampshire. In the meantime, Smith has been arraigned and is being detained in Essex County jail. See HUNTING ACCIDENT, page 2 An investigation into Hickeys death is ongoing with charges pending. Its just an awful tragedy, said Keene town supervisor Bill Ferebee, who knew Hickey from working with him at Adirondack Auto several years ago. An Elizabethtown resident, Hickey was born and raised in Keene. He was a quiet, humble man; a model person, said Ferebee. Its hard to understand. Hickeys death comes just months after another Keene resident, Jeremy Quinn, was found dead in the woods off Nasons Nubble Lane. Like Quinn, Hickey was married and the father of two young children. Its overwhelming to see how the town has come together for the family, Ferebee said.
