PLATTSBURGH Three years ago, a tradition began at Champlain Centre mall on Smithfield Boulevard, creating one night when people can help local nonprofits while reaping their own benefits. Night of Giving is a program that now extends across the nation where people may purchase tickets from participating nonprofit organizations and, in turn, receive discounts and door prizes at mall stores. This year, Night of Giving will be held at the mall Sunday, Nov. 23, from 3-6 p.m. The program was initially started to provide nonprofits an opportunity to increase their revenue, explained Champlain Centre marketing director Joan LaPier. What happens is that we supply tickets to nonprofits ... and they, in turn, sell them for $5 a piece. They keep all the money. We never see any money. Every year, different nonprofits take part in the program and receive very positive results, said LaPier. Last year, the Adirondack Humane Society raised $1,600, said LaPier. And, they said it couldn't have come at a better time, because they were faced with tremendous heating bills. LaPier said the program is little work for the nonprofits, only needing to sell the tickets the mall provides for them. Nearly 20 nonprofits are taking part in the program this year. Included are: Adirondack Community Action, Advocacy and Resource Center, American Cancer Society, Battle of Plattsburgh Association,Champlain Valley Sweet Adelines, Child Care Council/Family Connection, Family Promise, Go Red for Women, Hannahs Hope Fund, Journey Into Reading, Adirondack Dance Company, Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County, North Country Association for the Visually Impaired, North Country Center for Independence, Pyramids Child Development Center, St. Johns Feral Cat Fund Inc., Ted K Center, and United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties. A final list of businesses within the mall participating in the program is not completed. However, participants at this point include: Adirondack Trading Co., Advantage Wireless, Auntie Annes, Avon Oasis, Bath & Body Works, Best Buy, Christopher Banks, CJ Banks, Dicks Sporting Goods, DND Unisex, Footlocker, FYE, Gander Mountain, G&S Gifts, Hallmark, Hannoush Jewelers, Hickory Farms, J.C. Penney, Jims Sports, Kay Bee Toys, Kay Jewelers, Lady Footlocker, Maurices, Payless Shoes, Ritz Cameras, Sears, The Shoe Dept., Spencers, Taco Bell, and Verizon. Entertainment will be held throughout the mall from groups such as the Adirondack Dance Company, Champlain Irish Dancers and the Sweet Adelines. The neat thing is that the mall is all decorated ... So, the Night of Giving is very festive, LaPier said. Theres Christmas music ... so, really it is a nice tradition. Tickets may be purchased until the day of the event.
