Next weekend's Warrensburg Variety Show to offer song, dance and skits

WARRENSBURG For decades, Florence LaPoint and her volunteers have bought, wrapped and delivered toys during the holiday season to local families in need. Meanwhile, theres been a vibrant custom of presenting minstrel and variety shows in town. During the last seven years, these two traditions have intersected, delighting local audiences. Since 2002, LaPoint has helped produce the Warrensburg Variety Show, raising money for two holiday charities her Santas Elves effort, plus Operation Santa Claus, which provides needed food and clothing during the holidays. Next weekend, the show returns for its seventh year. The Warrensburg Variety Show, mixing songs, dance, skits, show tunes and comic routines, will be held at 7 p.m. Fri. Nov. 14 and Sat. Nov. 15 at Warrensburg Elementary School. Entitled American Pride, the show has a theme of how cultural diversity has made our nation great. The Variety show will open with the cast in costumes representing various countries, singing Were Coming to America. The first half will feature songs including The Happy Wanderer, Thats Amore, Four Leaf Clover, and Isle of Hope. Part two highlights patriotism with tunes like Yankee Doodle Dandy, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, American Soldier, and God Bless the U.S.A. Performers are primarily from Warrensburg and Thurman, joined by entertainers from Chestertown, Pottersville, Lake George, and other nearby communities. Accompanying on piano will be Faye Robinson, with Lane Schermerhorn on the drums and Dean Schermerhorn on bass Guitar. Several numbers will feature Hoddy Ovitt on guitar and Jim Davis strumming on his banjo. All seats are $8, and tickets are available at Posies in Warrensburg, from cast members and at the door.
