Teams in first statewide contest

ESSEX The first-ever Vermont High School State Championship Volleyball Tournament took place Nov. 1 at Essex High School Gymnasium. The tournament included girls, boys and coed teams from the northern half of the state including Lyndon Institute, Enosburg Falls High School and Vermont Commons School. The new Vermont State Championship Tournament in volleyball was created due in large part due to the efforts of a few local coaches who are passionate about volleyball and have worked tirelessly to promote the sport at the high school level. They included Jason Robtoy, volleyball coach at Enosburg Falls High School, Chris Brigham, EFHS Athletic Director, Bill Orleans of Green Mountain Volleyball, and Peter Goff, volleyball coach at Vermont Commons School in South Burlington. Goff received a grant in the spring 2008 from USA Volleyball to formalize his role as ambassador to promote volleyball at the high school level in Vermont. According to Goff, Vermont is the only state in the U.S. that has not offered a high school championship in volleyball in most public high schools. We were all very excited to see that change this year. Goff started an annual spring volleyball tournament four years ago that attracted 17 teams in 2008. He also offers seasonal volleyball workshops to introduce kids throughout the greater Chittenden County area to the sport. His colleagues at Enosburg Falls High School have focused on promoting volleyball as a club sport in high schools throughout the North Country.
