BURLINGTON Vermont Attorney General William H. Sorrell announced last week that his office has settled charges that Boves of Vermont, Inc. mislabeled its Italian-style pasta sauces and other food items including frozen meatballs as Vermont products. According to Sorrell, Boves products were made outside Vermont from ingredients whose geographic origin was either also out-of-state or unknown. The settlement requires Boves to donate $50,000 worth of food to the Vermont Foodbank and pay a civil penalty of $5,000. Despite the Vermont-made charges, Boves products have been praised by several food reviewers for their quality control, natural ingredients, taste appeal, and competitive pricing.
