Douglas jokingly referred to the large amount of Canadians utilizing Plattsburgh International as being part of a "full-scale invasion" of the state of Florida.
"They're launching that invasion out of Plattsburgh in growing numbers, and have already seized the scene in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and St. Petersburg," said Douglas, referring to existing Allegiant Air destinations available from the airport. Douglas referred to Direct Air's Punta Gorda destination as Plattsburgh International's "newest beachhead."
Charlotte County Airport is located 20 miles north of Fort Myers off Interstate 75 and is centrally-located from Sarasota, Bradenton and Naples. Direct Air's new flights will utilize Airbus A319 and A320 aircrafts, made available by a long-term agreement with Virgin America, said Ellison. The A319 is capable of seating 114 coach passengers and eight first-class passengers while the Airbus A320 can seat 141 coach and eight first-class passengers.
The new aircrafts feature touch-screen plasma televisions which give passengers access to 30 on-demand movies, live television, video games and in-flight service, said Ellison.
"We're really proud of the service and quality of our product," she said. "In our short time, we've come a long, long way and we get better and better."
The new flights will stop once in Myrtle Beach before continuing on, said Tull. The service will expand to include Wednesday flights beginning in February.
The cost to fly begins at $99 each way, said Ellison, which is based on availability. The median one-way fare will cost $149-$169, with passengers able to upgrade to first-class for $100 in advance on-line or $50 in person prior to boarding the flight, which is also based on availability. Direct Air allows for the checking of up to two bags at a cost of $25 each or $20 if booked in advance.
Ellison encouraged those wishing to fly Direct Air to register for their on-line mailing list which notifies recipients of fare specials.
