WESTPORT More than 160 students gathered in Westport for the 2008 Junior High School All-County Music Festival. Sponsored by the Essex County School Music Association, the annual event featured musicians selected from schools throughout the area including Ticonderoga, Moriah and Crown Point school districts. Under the direction of guest conductors, students spent the day rehearsing before they presented a public concert that evening. Karen Tromblee, Westport Central School superintendent, noted the performance was the first time her school had hosted an all-county event in its 75-year history. Its a pleasure to host this event, Tromblee said. Its an exceptional student who is committed to academics music or athletics. These are exceptional students. The all-county orchestra included Sharyl Monroe, Sarah Paparella, Emma Ofner, Megan Cole, Ian LaBounty, Erika Wolf, Chelsea Keith, Heidi Clark, Jodi Brown, Ashley Andersen, Sam LaPointe and Mechelle Cole of Crown Point on violin; Calvin Arno and Dan Groshans of Crown Point on viola; Elizabeth Karson and Ellen Kiely of Crown Point on cello; Ashley Morgan of Crown Point and Dale Quesnel of Ticonderoga on trumpet; Thomas Slattery of Moriah on trombone; and Mike Enman of Crown Point on percussion. These kids have been a pleasure to work with, said Carl Kodes of Plattsburgh, who directed the orchestra. We read and hear so much about whats wrong with kids today, but when you see a group like this you realize there's nothing wrong with out kids. Singing in the all-county chorus were Alex Macey, Natasha Burns and Tasha Hay of Crown Point; Cierra Madill of Moriah; and Rebecca Barber, Abigail Bevilaqua, Jeanette Coon, Taylor Dorsett, Grace Ginn, Karney Manning, Katie Palandrani, Sara Plude, Alyssa Rodriguez and Markie teRiele of Ticonderoga. This has been a delightful afternoon, said Karen Butters of Long Lake, who directed the chorus. This group of students arrived well-prepared and ready to work. Theyre wonderful singers.
