Elementary school receives new brick walkway

MORRISONVILLE Morrisonville Elementary School has been working toward the goal of developing their courtyard into a safe environment that will provide students with additional space for learning. Most recently, the school added a brick walkway in the courtyard, with $3,000 from Tool Box for Education, a grant from the Lowes home improvement store chain. We used to bring the kids out to the garden all the time, said Julie Evoy, president of the Morrisonville Family School Organization. The weeds were just too much. Eventually, Evoy decided there was a need to add the walkway to reduce the amount of weeds, so she applied for the grant. Although Evoys children are no longer students in the elementary school, she knew she needed to continue with the project once the grant came through last spring. I figured, okay, continue to go through with it. And thats what I did. Even though my kids arent here, Evoy said. The school also found a need for the pathway as many grandparents who have attended Grandparents Day festivities at the school were unable to walk on the old stone walkway, explained Evoy. Since the entire $3,000 was used for buying the brick for the pathway, Joe Nixon and Joe Deslauriers of J.J. Diggers Landscape and Nursery, Keeseville, provided a service to the school by putting in the brick free of charge. My familys been through a lot and all the communities in the area have pulled together for us, Nixon explained of why he chose to do the labor for free. So, its nice to do what we can. Something nice for the kids, added Deslauriers. Currently, the courtyard is used for various things such as an area for speech classes to take place, and allowing students plant vegetables in the garden. Well still feed the community whatever we get [from the vegetable garden], added Evoy, who plans to help the school through the springtime when planting needs to be done.
