Junior takes home top prize at after-prom party

BEEKMANTOWN When Chris Barnes learned he had won a car, the Beekmantown High School junior was almost in a state of shock. I didnt really believe it at first, said Barnes. Ive never won anything this big before. The lucky student was drawn from the 98 juniors who attended an after-prom party at the high school last Saturday. Juniors who attended the party and stayed there overnight were eligible to have their names entered into a drawing for the silver 2004 Pontiac Sunfire, donated by Knight Cadillac in Plattsburgh. The car was the top prize of several items given away at the party, which included cash and gift certificates. I was planning to go the party anyway, but this was a little bonus, Barnes laughed. The prize came at an opportune time for Barnes, whose previous car had been involved in a car accident. And, with his senior year on the horizon and the prospect of college not far behind, the car will come in handy, he said. I didnt have a car so it was kind of nice to get this one, he said. The after-prom party has grown in popularity since it was established more than 25 years ago as a safe alternative to other after-prom activities, which can involve alcohol and drug use. This years event was very well-attended, said high school principal Garth Frechette, with 162 out of 203 students who attended the prom attending the after-prom party. We have a lot of praise for Knight Cadillac for creating this opportunity for our students, Frechette said of the donation. The party itself is a great way for the community to show responsibility to the safety and welfare of the children and Im glad about all the support we received from parents and the community. It was a great night in general, Barnes said of the after-prom party. Its definitely a good way to spend one your most memorable times in high school. With or without winning the car, he added. But, the car is nice.
