Doug Duell chosen to lead local high school

WARRENSBURG A man whos spent nearly 19 years as a coach, teacher and administrator at Warrensburg High was appointed Monday to become the schools next principal. Doug Duell was named by the Warrensburg Central District School Board to succeed Dan Roberts as principal of Warrensburg Junior-Senior High School. The appointment is effective July 1. Now Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at WCS, Duell is known for not only long working hours, but for setting firm discipline standards while maintaining good rapport with students. Roberts, who recently announced his retirement after spending 36 years at Warrensburg Central, said he had considerable respect for Duells abilities. Doug is smart, a quick learner, hes open to new ideas, and he has the respect of the faculty, Roberts said. Duell has deep roots in the community. He was a quarterback of the Warrensburg High School football team all his high school years, and he graduated in 1985, continuing his studies at Ithaca College. There, he was a standout Varsity baseball player, pitching in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II World Series, a national championship which Ithaca won. Duell returned to his hometown, working at Warrensburg Central beginning in 1990 as a physical education teacher and coach while he studied educational administration at SUNY Plattsburgh. As Duell started at WCS, he coached JV baseball and basketball. The next year, he took over as the Varsity basketball coach, and later, Varsity baseball. In 1998, Duell was named Director of Discipline, followed by the post of Assistant Principal in 2001, and the additional role of Athletic Director starting in 2002. During three of these later years, he was also principal of the districts K-8 summer school. Roberts said Duell had gained considerable insight into educational administration during these years and differing roles at WCS. He also praised Duells unwavering commitment to the school system and the community. Doug is knowledgeable, he said. Hes paid his dues. Following the appointment, Duell said he was pleased with the new post. Im excited about this opportunity and challenge, he said. Im looking forward to working on behalf of the students so they can achieve great things. Duell said he enjoyed having a formative role in students academic careers. Its helpful when I know whats going on in their lives and can be there for them both through their difficult times and during their shining moments to offer congratulations, he said. Duell praised Roberts as an inspiring mentor, serving in that role ever since Duell was in high school. The schools faculty, staff and administrators also received his praise. I cant say enough about the tremendous support and training Ive received here, and I owe so much to Dan, he said. Im looking forward to working with everyone. Superintendent of Schools Tim Lawson said he too was happy about the boards appointment. We look forward to Doug continuing to expand the many initiatives he has already brought about, he said. Duells ability to be a tough disciplinarian while maintaining rapport with students is a rare talent, but possible because of Duells characteristics and style, Lawson said. Dougs firm, fair, consistent and calm, he said. He cares about the school and its image, the community, and most of all the kids, Lawson said. Roberts said Duell maintained the student policies consistently, regardless of the students background, upbringing or reputation, and that he backed up teachers when behavior problems arose in classrooms. His rules are strict, clear, and consistent, Roberts said. Duell said he was prepared to keep up the schools positive momentum. We have a great school here, he said. Were headed in the right direction.
