One-run earns St. Michael's baseball sweep of Lyndon

LYNDON CENTER Saint Michaels College sophomore Kevin Wickles (Hatfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) out-dueled Lyndon States Matthew Picard (Winooski) for eight innings and came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader played at Skip Pound Field. The right-handed Wickles went the distance to get the win for the Purple Knights (11-24), allowing one run on eight hits while striking out eight and walking six. Picard, a junior lefty, tossed eight innings as well, giving up two earned runs on eight hits while fanning seven and walking two. Sophomore Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) had two hits for the Purple Knights and Rob Malloy (Burlington) pounded out three for the Hornets in game one. Matt Lapham (Groton) also had two hits for Lyndon. In game two, Saint Michaels jumped out to a 5-1 lead only to see the Hornets surge back for a 8-6 advantage after four innings of play. In the top of the fifth, two Lyndon State errors and run-scoring singles by Tim Pilczak (Cohasset, Mass./Kent Hills School) and freshman Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) erased the deficit and propelled the Purple Knights in an abbreviated 9-8 victory in five innings. Yodzio had three hits for the Purple Knights, while junior captain Joe Gil (Andover, Mass./Andover) and senior captain Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn.\Notre Dame Fairfield) chipped in two. Adrian Guyer (Lyndonville), Michael Swan (Southington, Conn.), Ben Clark (Brattleboro) and Dana Biondi (Cheshire, Conn.) collected two hits for the Hornets. One of Clark's hits was a solo home run to deep right field in the third. Junior Colin Dudunake (Florence, Mass./Suffield Acad.), who relieved Purple Knight senior starter Kyle Gingras (Pittsfield, N.H./Pittsfield) in the third, picked up the win; allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out one. Jordan Barnes (Hardwick), who came on in the second for Clark, took the loss. The Purple Knights closed out their 2008 season under the lights in Lowell, Mass. against the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell May 2.
