Same-sex couples

To the Addison Eagle: MAUHS senior Elizabeth Lowell deserves praise and encouragement for her community outreach project aimed at ending discrimination against gays and lesbians. We hope she will receive constructive responses to her request for thoughtful input from Vermonters. When our generation was in high school, and even college, the topic of homosexuality was never discussed. We know now that there were several gays and lesbians among our friends, relatives, acquaintances and teachers, who undoubtedly suffered greatly from having to hide their sexual orientation... Now a bill granting full civil marriage rights to same-sex couples has been introduced in the legislature. Public support for passage of the bill is very important... We would urge Elizabeth Lowell to read the report of the Commission on Family Recognition and Protection and to contact the Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force, which has many members in our area. Projects such as hers can make an important contribution to mutual understanding and social progress. We wish her success and look forward to hearing more from her.
