Town officials decline to serve after March 4 election

Two Leicester, Vt., residents were elected to local government positions on Town Meeting and Primary Day, March 4, but have now decided that they will not serve in those positions. Ron Fiske was elected to first constabule and as a write-in for the selectboard; he cannot serve in both capacities. He has declined the constabulary position, said Diane Benware. Benware is a long-time observer and active in various townplanning activities. Town Treasurer Donna Pidgeon had indicated to folks she wanted to retire, but some folks had talked her into continuing, so a last minute campaign for write in was waged. After careful deliberations with her family and as a result of a very long election day with its own set of frustrations, she indicated to the board last week that she had rethought her idea and handed her letter in, declining the positions, according to Benware The town is now advertising for residents to let town officials know if they'd like to be appointed until March 2009. The other option is that five percent of the electorate can petition for a special vote to fill both positions, Benware said. So, at the moment we will accept letters and references from residents who might like to be appointed as clerk and or treasurer.
