Matthews Trucking LLC, located at 605 DeLong Rd. in Cornwall is a family-owned business specializing in manure hauling. This year Matthew Severy and his son, Eric, are planning on using a revolutionary drag hose system to spread manure. Such a machine has been successfully utilized in the midwest and Canada for years. Matthews Trucking LLC has been in business since 1991. Eric recently graduated from the University of Northwestern Ohio specializing in agricultural diesel mechanics, and he has had the opportunity to first-hand observe the utilization perfection of the drag hose system. Eric said, Such a system has not been successfully done in Vermont yet. When asked what their formula for success would be, he sid, Its the compaction. Less compaction on the field benefits the farmer by increasing crop yield. This system will also keep tractors and manure tankers off the road. This system will also reduce manure tankers on public highways helping the agricultural community with public relations. What exactly is the drag hose system, and what does it run on? Its a big water pump run by a diesel engine located at the manure pit, which pumps the waste through a six-inch high-pressured hose that hooks to the back of the tractor for spreading. The system right now can pump up to one and a half miles from the pit and predicting ahead could go up to three miles from the farm. What made the Severy family consider such a system? Eric said, Mainly the lower compaction. The future plan is for incorporating manure using the drag hose system, which would reduce runoff and odor. All would benefit from this, especially those with nutrient management regulations in the State of Vermont. The State of Vermont does not permit any spreading from December through April, but Matthews Trucking LLC already have lined up farms waiting for this new revolutionary machinery. The Severy family has done their homework and has invested their time and quite extensive resources into the drag hose system and feels that great strides will be achieved in Vermont.
