Ti, Moriah fall in championship tilts

Cold shooting led to defeat for Ticonderoga in the Section VII Class C girls basketball tournament championship game Feb. 29 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Seton Catholic won the title with a 41-24 victory. The Sentinels, who had split a pair of regular season games with Seton, managed just seven field goals in the contest and failed to put together back-to-back baskets the entire second half. Seton jumped to a 10-3 lead. Ti managed to get within 10-7 early in the second period, but Seton closed the first half with a 9-3 spurt for a 19-10 advantage. The Knights stretched their lead to 33-18 in the third quarter. Kate Huestis tallied seven points, five at the free throw line, to pace Ticonderoga. Julie Thompson had six points for the Sentinels, who finish the season with a 9-11 record. Kara Stark and Trisha Harris each managed 12 points to key the Seton Catholic offense. Boys' Action Moriah suffered through its worst offensive night of the season in losing the Section VII Class D boys basketball tournament championship game March 1 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Westport used a rugged defense to win, 45-19. Moriah never managed more than seven points in a quarter and hit just six field goals the entire game. Westport raced to a 12-4 lead and held a 19-7 advantage at the intermission. Moriah rallied with nine points early in the second half, but Bo McKinley answered for Westport. McKinley scored 10 points as the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to break the game open. Nathan gay scored 17 points for Westport. McKinley added 13. Moriah got nine points from Jim carlson. Moriah 55, Schroon Lake 50 Moriah edged Schroon Lake, 55-50, in overtime Feb. 28 to gain a berth in the Section VII Class D boys basketball tournament championship game. Missed free throws at the end of regular allowed Schroon Lake to rally and force the extra session, but the Vikings won the game when Jim Carlson hit a lay up with 44 seconds remaining for a 51-50 lead and Don Tesar hit a pair of clutch free throws to push the advantage to 53-50 with 25 seconds to play. Hayden Whalen, who scored Moriahs final six points of regulation, finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Slattery added 10 points for the winners. Ethan Tyrrell scored 14 points for Schroon Lake, including two pressure free throws with 0.7 seconds left in the final quarter to force overtime. Kyle Bush and George Egan each had 12 points for the Wildcats.
