Knights to honor Irishman

TICONDEROGA The Ticonderoga Knights of Columbus will renew a tradition with its annual Irishman of the Year celebration Saturday, March 15. Council 333 will honor a local resident at the K of C hall on Montcalm Street. Festivities will get under way with a happy hour at 6 p.m. A corned beef dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The Irishman of the Year, a closely-guarded secret, will be honored or roasted at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 a person and can be reserved by calling the K of C at 585-6520. Tickets will also be available at the door. The event is open to the public. Following dinner there will be Irish music. The Irishman of the Year dinner is so successful, it sold out last year when Jim Guyette was honored. The year before Les Bilow was the honoree. Were always torn between announcing the Irishman of the Year in advance and keeping it a surprise, Ralph Corbo of the Knights said. We enjoy the surprise, though. The Irishman of the Year is selected by a Knights of Columbus committee. This years Irishman of the Year is a good choice, Corbo said. Ticonderogas Irishman of the Year dinner has been held for more than 20 years. It started as a Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce function and was eventually taken over by the Knights of Columbus. We used to do it in concert with the chamber of commerce, so the Irishman of the Year wasnt necessarily a Knights of Columbus member, Corbo said. It has become a Knights of Columbus event to honor a member who has done a lot for the organization and the community. The St. Patricks Day celebration wont end with the annual Irishman of the Year dinner. The Knights of Columbus will have their annual corned beef sandwich sale St. Patricks Day, Monday, March 17, beginning at noon. The club bar will also be open. Sandwiches will sell for $5 each.
