A Red-Hot Afternoon for the Chile Pepper Eating Contest

INDIAN LAKE It was a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, Feb. 16, for the 3rd Annual Chile Pepper Eating Contest held at Martys Chili Nights in Indian Lake. Ten contestants registered to eat as many jalapeno peppers as they could in one minute. This year the Jalapeno peppers were huge and scared some of the contestants. Each person started out with a bowl of 10, but no one was able to get past the first bowl. The restaurant was full of spectators, cheering on their favorite contestant. Four participants from the 2007 contest returned to compete again this year; Art Sabourin, the reigning champion; Jamie Mitchell, second place winner; Ron Comstock and Richelle Greenhalgh. Greenhalgh also received an honorable mention as the only female contestant participating since the contest began in 2006. Art Sabourin, reigning champion, did it again and won for a third year in a row, consuming all ten of his peppers! Chris Jackson and Jamie Mitchell both ate nine peppers and tied for second place. Three rounds of Rock-Paper-Scissors saw Jamie Mitchell victorious as a repeat second place winner!
