Westport man killed in accident

ELIZABETHTOWN A Westport man was killed last week in a single-car automobile accident. Scott Costin, 38, went off the road on County Route 8 also known as Wadhams Road in Elizabethtown Wednesday, Feb. 20. Passerbys spotted his overturned Toyota about 4:30 a.m., and contacted state police. Lewis-based state police Capt. John Tibbits said the accident appeared to be caused by speed and black ice. He said it appeared Costin lost control of his vehicle, attempted to correct, and then went off the road. Costin was not wearing a seat belt, and alcohol involvement was suspected. Costin was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted by Essex County coroner Paul Connery determined Costins death was accidental, with internal injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident. Toxicology testing has not been completed, and investigation is still ongoing. Costin, a carpenter, is survived by two daughters, Amanda Costin, 19, of Malone and Jessica Keech, 15, of Lewis; and one son, Christopher Mazzacone, 9, of Westport. After cremation, a memorial service was held Feb. 28.
