Smoke free environments important

To the editor: Wow. Just when you think that corporations do not care about consumers, Wegmans supermarkets makes the decision to stop selling tobacco in their 71 supermarkets located in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland. Wegmans has rightly recognized that tobacco products are no ordinary consumer product. Rather, Wegmans uses the knowledge that tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, that tobacco use is sickening millions of adults but most dramatically children, as well as, costing $100 billion in health care bills each year in justifying their ethical decision to stop selling tobacco products. The current presidential primaries have shown us that health care is a major focus for the American public and we all need to step up and make decisions about self-management of our personal health care. Thank you to hospitals and motels/hotels that have become smoke free and now to a smoke free supermarket for taking that healthy step forward. Catherine LaRock-McMahon
