Arrest made in connection to suspicious fires on Margaret Street

PLATTSBURGH A 46-year-old city man has been arrested in connection with a suspicious fires that began in the basement and first floor of the apartment he had been renting at 305 Margaret St. Michael G. Bayer was arrested Feb. 20 for third-degree arson, a class C felony. On Feb. 8, at 5:50 p.m., city police received a report smoke was coming from Bayers apartment. Patrol officers responded with the Plattsburgh Fire Department and found a fire burning inside the residence and Mr. Bayer standing outdoors with what appeared to be soot stains around his mouth and nose. Mr. Bayer made statements to arriving officers indicating he had set the fire to end his life. He was transported by ambulance to CVPH Medical Center where he was admitted with respiratory injury. Mr. Bayer was arrested following his release from the hospital. He was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and remanded to Clinton County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
