Car careens into Bay Optical, woman jumps to safety

WARRENSBURG A male motorist smashed through the wall of Bay Optical on Lower Main St. Friday afternoon and a woman jumped to safety, police said, as his 2006 Lexus sedan demolished a picture window, a counter, and furniture before coming to rest entirely inside the retail building. Shortly after 1:15 p.m., Jeffrey M. Levine, 59, of Chestertown had been parked in front of the west wall, backed up, hit a utility pole, then inexplicably drove forward at a speed sufficient enough to smash through the stone-faced wall and window of the retail office where Sarah M.J. Sullivan, 26, was working, police said. Police on the scene said Sullivan, from Hudson Falls, instinctively jumped up on the counter when the car began to careen through the wall, avoiding what could have been a serious injury. Jeannie Cavanaugh, owner of nearby Double M Western Wear, saw the crash and came to Sullivans aid. I saw the car back up against pole, then he went flying straight through the wall, she said. Sarah crawled over the car to bet out of the building she was bleeding on her arms. Cavanaugh said Sullivan had been standing behind her desk before the Lexus smashed it. That car missed her by inches, she said. It is an absolute miracle that shes alive. Cavanaugh brought Sullivan into her store and helped her clean the shards of glass off her before she was transported by the Warrensburg Emergency Squad to Glens Falls Hospital for evaluation, bystanders and officials said. Levine was also taken to Glens Falls Hospital. Officials on the scene estimated that the crash caused many thousands of dollars of damage. Utilities were disconnected, and by late afternoon, workmen had boarded up the west wall of the Bay Optical office. Levine was ticketed for unsafe backing. The incident was investigated by Officer Grace, officer Dunn and Investigator Lail of the Warren County Sheriffs Dept.
