Girl Scouts fish for the... bronze?

WEST CHAZY The girls of Girl Scout Troop 4187 are in agreement about two things they like to fish and they love animals. From those two interests arose the idea of holding a fishing derby to raise funds to help animals. Girl Scouts from throughout the council joined with family and friends June 14 at Martins Fish Preserve to try to catch the big one, as the one who caught the biggest fish would take home a brand new 15-speed bicycle. I hope we all catch a lot of fish, said 10-year-old Tabitha Jiguere as she prepared for another cast. Im looking forward to seeing if I win any prizes, added Carissa Pellerin. Not only did they get the chance to hook a fish, the girls also earned their Bronze Awards, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. In order to earn it, girls must demonstrate their leadership and planning skills in a way that has a positive impact on the community. We really [held the derby] to earn money towards our Bronze Award, explained Renee Pellerin, who is the leader of the Junior Girl Scout troop based in the communities of Dannemora, Cadyville and Saranac. To earn the award, the troop is planning to celebrate Girl Scout founder Juliette Lows birthday by hosting a party with a twist it will be all for the dogs. And, the cats. Next March, the troop will invite the rest of the council to the birthday bash to be held at a local animal shelter. Of course, like most birthday parties, there will be gifts. The difference is these gifts will be for the animals in the shelter. Were going to raise stuff for the animal shelter, explained Carissa Pellerin. Toys and food and leashes. The leaders came up with the idea of the birthday party, added Renee Pellerin, but the girls wanted to do it with the animals. Because the entire council will be invited, the troop decided it would be a good idea to get started with the fundraising and planning early.
