Governor's reps to hold town hall meeting at Clinton Community College

PLATTSBURGH Representatives from the office of Gov. David A. Paterson will host a town hall-format meeting for people in the North Country. Clinton Community College will be among the 13 stops on a tour of the state conducted by the governor's Economic Security Cabinet. The meetings will be held to present the cabinet's ideas for improving the economic well-being of low-income families and to get input from the public who will ultimately be affected by its decisions. According to a press release from the governor's office, the cabinet has four clear-cut objectives: "to reduce New Yorks high cost of living; establish education and workforce development opportunities for a highly competitive economy; strengthen the social safety net for low-income New Yorkers; and bring jobs into our communities." These are difficult economic times for the state and the country, and nobody feels it more than low-income families across New York State, Paterson said in a prepared statement. For too long, these families have been ignored, leaving them precariously close to falling through the cracks. We want to reassure them that this Administration is firmly committed to helping hard-working New Yorkers weather these difficult economic times by empowering them to make the strides necessary to improve their lives. The Economic Security Cabinet is comprised of 20 state agencies and was established to implement this agenda and "focus on the very real needs of working families, with the goal of strengthening and growing the middle class." The meetings will provide an opportunity for the public to hear about the states commitment to protecting and enhancing economic security for New York families. Suggestions from employers, labor representatives, researchers, advocates, and the general public will be considered "a vital part of this effort," and interested individuals are invited to provide written submissions and/or three minutes of in-person testimony. The meeting at Clinton Community College, 136 Clinton Point Drive, will be held Wednesday, July 16, from 4-7 p.m. For more information regarding the Economic Security Cabinet and town hall meetings, visit the cabinets Web site http://economicsecurity.us.
