Chamber offers 10-hour construction industry seminar

PLATTSBURGH The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a special seminar 10-hour Construction Industry Seminar. The seminar starts Monday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, June 24, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The seminar will be held at the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, 7061 State Route 9. Jeff Malo from ATC Associates Inc. will be the presenter. New York State passed a new law this summer. According to the new law, any contract totaling $250,000 or more for construction, reconstruction, repair or maintenance the state or a municipality is involved in must require all laborers, workers and mechanics be certified as having completed the OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Training. That goes for all workers who will be on the job, including those of any sub-contractors. The workers must be trained by July 31. The NYS Department of Labor is in charge of enforcing the new law. This two-day course will provide contracting personnel and individuals who are responsible for on-site contractors the basic knowledge and tools necessary to control hazards associated with construction. It covers OSHA policies, procedures and standards as well as safety and health issues. Topics to be covered include each section of the OSHA construction standards. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous, using the OSHA standards as a guide. Immediately following the workshop portion of the day, an optional quiz will be offered to participants who wish to obtain a certification certificate. This service is offered at no additional charge. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration is $55 per person. It includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
