SHELBURNE Shelburne remembered those who have served their country in times of war on Memorial Day with a gathering on the Shelburne Parade Ground. The Shelburne Scout Troop 602 filled their traditional role, presenting the colors and leading the Pledge. In another decade-old tradition, the service concluded with all veterans in the crowd forming a long line to receive the applause of their friends and neighbors and then personal expressions of gratitude as the crowd comes forward to shake hands. Guest speaker was Gov. Jim Douglas who reminded Shelburne residents of the contribution Vermonters have made to the security of their country, from their service with George Washington to the present day with Vermont service men and women serving and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.
