Little City gears up for French Heritage Days

VERGENNES French Heritage Days are fast becoming one of the most popular weekend events in Addison County. Tapping the rich legacy of local French colonial traditions, plus the many descendants of the first French pioneers to settle the Champlain Valley, Vergennes officials have struck a major chord. Starting Friday, July 11, 6-9 p.m. through Saturday, July 12, 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., at Vergennes City Park and the Vergennes Opera House, anything French goes and it goes well with just about anything, especially wine (a special Vergennes-origin wine grape, dating to the 18th century, was recently rediscovered and made into a popular Finger Lakes wine). Heres a small sampling of this years French Heritage Days: Veill_ in Vergennes Opera House Friday evening, 6-9 p.m., with traditional French Canadian supper and featuring Club Carrefour, visiting artists from Quebec who promise a lively evening of dance with instruction and song! Admission: $15. To purchase tickets see info below. Franco-American music, French-Canadian fiddling. French response songs, step-dancing, Green Mountain Cloggers, reenactors. French food, antique vehicles and engines, traditional craft demonstrations, fencing demonstration, exhibits, hands-on fun such as churning ice cream, pumping water, old time games, horse and carriage rides. French-Canadian Genealogical Society will help you trace your roots, childrens educational activities, farmers market, Bastille Day Waiters Race, narrated English and French historical walking tours, boat cruises on Otter Creek Celebrate a French mass at St. Peter Catholic Church.
