To the editor, I found Whitney Jackson's recent commentary on the difficulties of making ends meet a welcome read for its honesty and refreshingly critical look at the health of our community and, indeed, our nation. While I am sorry for Ms. Jackson's travails, I commend her for putting her own and the plight of countless others at the heart of her column. We need that kind of critical gaze on the deterioration of our Founders' promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Martha Swan
