Jazz trio slated for Tannery Pond

NORTH CREEK On Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. the Spike Wilner Jazz Trio will perform at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek, N.Y. The concert will include Spike Wilner on piano, Paul Gill on bass and Yotam Silberstein on guitar. The classic American songbook will be played with music by Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Rogers and solo piano pieces by Scott Joplin, James P. Johnson and Willie The Lion Smith. There will also be a free workshop and discussion with Spike Wilner at 5;30 p.m. at the Tannery Center. The concert is presented by Upper Hudson Musical Arts, a not for profit corporation dedicated to bringing excellent music to northern New York. Spike Wilner is a fixture on the New York City Jazz scene and has played with a number of well known musicians including Tony Bennett, Maynard Furgeson, Wynton Marsalis and Artie Shaw. He has recorded six albums as a leader , his most recent Three to Go was released this month on the Positone Label. Wilner holds a MFA in Jazz piano from the State University of New York and is co-owner of the Greenwich Village Jazz Club, Smallis where he performs regularly. For more information see his website www.spikewilner.com . Bass player Paul Gill currently divides his time touring with both singer/songwriter Elvis Costello and guitarist Pat Martino. Gill received a Bachelors Degree in Music from Towson University in 1985 and after performing extensively in the Baltimore Washington area with local and National artists such as Gary Bartz and Stanley Turrentine, moved to New York. He worked for four years with vocalist John Hendricks .In addition he has worked with several other artists and groups such as singer Diana Krall, Lou Donaldson, George Colema ,Joe Henderson , the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Toshiko Akoyshi Jazz Orchestra. Yotam Silberstein , born and raised in Israel , has been playing guitar since the age of ten. After serving as musical director of the Israeli Army Band and at the age of twenty one Yotam won the Rimon Jazz player of the Year competition with his trio and participated in Italys Umbria Jazz Festival. In 2005 he received a scholarship to New Yorks New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and also was semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition.
