James Earl Sprague Jr.

PORT HENRY James Earl Sprague Jr., 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Port Henry, N.Y., on Jan. 4, 2008, after a long battle with cancer; surrounded by his loving wife Lucille Sprague, his children and his buddy Peanut. He was born April 22, 1930, in Spencertown, N.Y., son of James and Beatrice (Stanton) Sprague Sr. He worked at Nu Way laundry for his father-in-law for several years. Earl also worked in the mines in Canton, N.Y. After working for 36-1/2 years at the Ticonderoga Mill, he retired in 1992. With the help of his wife Lucille and 11 children, he owned and operated Sprague's Woodcraft Shop in Port Henry, N.Y.; he was a wonderful carpenter/woodworker (built first Champ, the Lake Champlain monster). Earl enjoyed being with his family, working in his shop and sitting next to his wood stove in his rocking chair. He loved to visit with anyone who stopped by, asking who they were and where they were from, always having a story for everyone. He also loved sitting in the kitchen or in the garage watching traffic and the birds at his feeders. He is predeceased by his parents, James Earl Sprague Sr. and Beatrice (Stanton) Sprague; sister Marion (Sprague) Cogswell Crossman; his daughter, Deborah Lynn Sprague, 1991; and son, Joseph Earl Sprague, 2007. He is survived by his wife Lucille (Catanzarita) Sprague of 58 years of Port Henry; daughter Linda, her husband Gary Fleming of Moriah, their four children: Linda and friend Allan Ploufe, their children Tonya Fleming and Christopher Ploufe of Bridport, Vt.; Gary Jr. and friend Becky Defelice, their children Bruce and Franny Chandler, Makayla and Kyle Fleming of Port Henry; Rebecca and William McDonough, their children Douglas and Justin Sherman and William McDonough II of Port Henry; Bart Fleming and friend Glenda Calebrese, their child Desire Fleming of Port Henry; son Joe's family, survived by his companion Donna Swinington of Brandon, Vt.; and his children, Elise and Chris Demarias, their children Michael and Riley of Moriah; Jadon and Amanda Sprague of Oswego; Jacob and Brittney Sprague and their daughter Abbigail of Moriah; Kane Sprague of Portland, Maine; daughter Evelyn, her husband Joe Celotti of Port Henry, their children Dylan Celotti and fianc_lizabeth Slattery of Witherbee; Seth Celotti and wife Melissa and their son Reese of Crown Point; son James Earl Sprague III and Pauline Burgey of Moriah, their children, Erin Lee Sprague and Miguel Cabrera of New York City; Jed and Morgan Sprague of Crown Point; Evelyn Sprague, Emily Sprague and friend Brad, James E. Sprague IV and Jordan Sprague of Moriah; daughter Helen, her husband Chuck Robinson, their daughter Karissa (Karissa-ka) of Crown Point; daughter Lisa M. Sprague, her life long partner Jay Hamel and granddog Kaz of Addison, Vt.; daughter Stacy (Doc Adams), her husband Jim Drake of Port Henry, their children Jamie Drake and friend Tyler Parks of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; Amy and Dave Smith of Plattsburgh; Justin Drake and friend Brenda Gregory of Plattsburgh; Michael Drake and Mitzy of Port Henry; daughter Frances, her husband Timothy Malaney and their daughter Kaleigh (Sara do) of Ticonderoga; daughter Barb Armstrong and friend Jim Michener of Mineville, her children, Sue Tefoe and partner Chucky Farnsworth, their son Spencer of Mineville; Ashley Tefoe, Caleb and Timothy Armstrong of Mineville; son John, his wife Crystal, their children Malibu, Macey and John Jr. of Westport; daughter Deborah's children, Jessica Sprague and partner Keith Gilbo of Plattsburgh; Walter Sprague of Port Henry, and friend Melinda Smith; a sister, Muriel (Sprague) Woods of Crown Point; and special cousins; nieces and nephews; a lifetime friend, Danny Cutting of Port Henry. And many thanks to special friends and neighbors that called or stopped by during this difficult time. There will be no calling hours or services at the request of Earl. Anybody wishing to pay their respects to the family can join them Sunday, Jan. 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Port Henry. Burial will be held at a later date in the Catanzarita family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his honor, Earl Sprague, to the Moriah Ambulance Squad, Port Henry, NY 12974 or High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 192, Port Henry, NY 12974. Special thanks to the Westport Health Center and Staff, Elizabethtown Hospital, Dr. Duus, Moriah Ambulance, Rev. Paul J. Kelly and High Peaks Hospice for their support and help during these final weeks. The family would like to thank the staff of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit 1W of the McGuire VA Medical Center for all of the assistance and support they provided during Dannys difficult rehabilitation.
