NEW RUSSIA Danny J. ODonnell, 1SG (Retired), 48, of 5905 Pentagon Court, Hope Mills, died Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Hunter Hull McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Born in Plattsburgh, New York, to Robert Burres ODonnell and Pat Greene ODonnell, of New Russia, New York, he grew up in the Adirondack Mountains. Danny lived with his Aunt Cecile and Uncle Bud ODonnell in Fayetteville, North Carolina while attending 71st High School; before joining the U.S. Army in 1979, he also lived in Florida. Danny served his country 21 years with tours in Fort Bragg, Korea and the Republic of Panama. His 10 years with 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) took him to many nations throughout Europe, Greenland, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. He retired as 1SG of Echo Company, 782nd Main Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. He earned the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Master Parachutist Badge with Jumpmaster Designation, Parachute Rigger Badge and the French Army Parachutist Badge. Danny was intensely passionate about his country, the Army, parachute rigging, skydiving, scuba diving, his Harleys and his wolves. OD (as he was known to his friends) was exciting to be around; he enjoyed life and believed in pushing the envelope and living on the edge. His zest for adventure took him to many interesting places. His free spirit will be missed. Danny leaves his wife, Anne Minter ODonnell of Fayetteville, NC; his son, Michael James ODonnell, and his adopted mother, Gina Johns of Ticonderoga, NY; mother, Pat Provo and her husband, Dick, of Willsboro, NY; his much loved Mom and her husband, Myrna and Floyd LaBombard of Lewis, NY; special grandmother, Venna Cassavaugh of Elizabethtown, NY; brother, Robert Michael ODonnell of San Diego, CA; half-sister and her husband, Vicki and Glen Mara of St. Augustine, FL; uncles and aunts, Thomas Bud and Cecile ODonnell of Fayetteville, NC; Jimmy and Carolyn Green of Watertown, NY; cousins, Terry, Tracey and Tara ODonnell of Fayetteville, NC; and his first wife, Jackie ODonnell of Fayetteville, NC. He was predeceased by his father, Robert; half-brother, Ricky Provo; paternal grandparents Morgan Luke and Leah Burres ODonnell; maternal grandparents, James and Tootsie Greene; cousins, Tammy and Thomas ODonnell. Plans are being made for burial in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in the spring.
