Teenager charged with stealing city police officer's gun

PLATTSBURGH A 19-year-old city man faces charges in connection to the alleged theft of a gun owned by a Plattsburgh Police Department officer. Andrew G. LaDuke, of Helen St., was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree making a false sworn statement, both misdemeanors. According to documents filed with Plattsburgh City Court, LaDuke was with friends at the home of Officer Shaun Luck, visiting with the officers 17-year-old daughter while he was at work Dec. 25. Statements provided by witnesses that night, including LaDuke, stated Officer Lucks daughter was showing her fathers private collection of weapons later that night, which included a Ruger .357 six-shot revolver with a silver barrel and wooden grip. Initially, according to the statements, the gun was hidden in the apartment, causing the girl to question her guests as to where the gun was hidden. The gun was later found in the bathroom. Statements from witnesses at the apartment that night said LaDuke hid the gun, though LaDuke refuted that claim in his own statement. The gun was reportedly returned by the girl to one of the apartments bedrooms, and later found missing again, according to witness statements. According to LaDukes statement, he claimed he did not take the gun and I did not see anyone with it. It was alleged LaDuke visited friends the following day with the gun in his possession, claiming he paid $50 for the gun, which Officer Luck estimated as being worth $300 in his statement to police. One witness claimed LaDuke said the gun was stolen from a cop and once he was convinced it would be best for him to get rid of it, he used a screwdriver to scratch off the guns serial number. He was further accused of throwing the gun into the Saranac River near Plattsburgh High School. One witness led authorities to the site where LaDuke allegedly dumped the gun, though the gun has not been reported as being recovered as of Tuesday morning. LaDuke was arraigned on the charges against him in Plattsburgh City Court Jan. 4 in front of the Hon. Penelope D. Clute. He was remanded to Clinton County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond. LaDuke appeared again before Judge Clute with his attorney, Allan B. Cruikshank Jr., Jan. 11, where it he was scheduled to again appear before the court Wednesday, Jan. 23. Plattsburgh Police Department Det. Steven J. Dube stated he could not comment on the investigation, which is ongoing.
