Police arrest suspect after two-car accident

PLATTSBURGH A city man faces charges following a late evening accident earlier this week. Plattsburgh Police Department officers were called to a routine two car-motor vehicle accident on the corner of Lynde Street and Bailey Avenue at approximately 9:15 p.m. Jan. 13. Officers arriving on the scene learned the male driver of one of the vehicles had fled the scene on foot prior to their arrival and was being followed by a bystander on Palmer Street. Officers were dispatched to Palmer Street where they located and arrested Brian M. Barber, 25, inside a running vehicle in the driveway of a private residence. A department report states Barber smelled of alcohol and exhibited signs of intoxication. Officers located property in his pockets reported stolen earlier in the evening from vehicles in the neighborhood. The 2008 Jeep Commander vehicle he had allegedly been operating when he was involved in the motor vehicle accident was found to have been stolen earlier in the night from the parking lot at Golden Gate Apartments on Margaret Street. Barber has not been ruled out as a suspect in the larcenies of three other cars in the north end of the city over the past week. Keys to each of the vehicles had been left hidden in the unlocked vehicles by their owners. Barber was initially charged with driving while intoxicated, fourth- and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was further charged with several violations of Vehicle and Traffic Law, including leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Barber was remanded to city lock-up and was awaiting arraignment Jan. 14. Anyone who is missing property from their vehicle or who had their vehicle rummaged through overnight is asked to call city police at 563-3411.
