ECH CEO explains Wilmington expansion

To the editor: In response to the article that was published Saturday, January 12, 2008 in the Valley News, titled ECH moving into Wilmington Health Center I would like to clarify a few points. At the request of the Wilmington Town Board, Elizabethtown Community Hospital submitted a proposal for operating the Wilmington Health Center. A joint venture in running the Wilmington Health Center was discussed with Adirondack Medical Center, but the reality is that these partnerships are very complex to manage, especially in a health care setting. For example, the dividing of responsibilities can be very difficult, such as the sharing of costs and liability, patient confidentiality guidelines (HIPAA) and staffing. We do partner with neighboring health care organizations on a variety of services and will continue with the good working relationships we have established. The priority of Elizabethtown Community Hospital is the health of our patients. Our mission is to promote wellness and provide quality health care with skill, compassion and dignity. This is what we will do for the Wilmington and Jay area residents and we are excited to begin this partnership with the community. Rodney C. Boula
