Around the County

We are in the middle of another cool-down in Central Florida; our temperatures this morning were in the 40s and it is supposed to warm up to about 65 by afternoon. Even to us transplanted northerners, that feels chilly. I know, I know, compared to the temperatures in my North Country, these temps are balmy, but Im beginning to believe that there is truly something to the thinning of the blood! If you are a fisherman and if there is any ice at all on Lake Champlain, be careful! There are too many unnecessary tragedies from men and boys and women, too, tempting fate on that water. You have to respect it in the summer and in the winter as well! Clinton and McCain are the winners in New Hampshire. No matter what your politics are and who your personal choice for our next President is, the next few months should prove very interesting. By Election Day, we will be so tired of it all, well be ready to get it all over with! Soon there will be air service from Plattsburgh to Myrtle Beach and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Allegiant Air will also soon start direct flights to Orlando as well as to Fort Lauderdale. Once again, and I cant say this enough, Kudos to all of those involved to bring convenient, efficient air service to our region! Congratulations to Plattsburgh State for being ranked by Kiplingers Personal Finance Magazine as being among the best values for public campuses in the United States. Rankings were based on academic quality, cost and financial aid. While I am not a skier or a boarder, this sounds like a good deal to me! On Friday, Feb. 1, The Sportswriters, a discussion with ESPN The Magazines writer Buster Olney and Editor John Scher will take place at SUNY Plattsburgh in Krinovitz Auditorium in Hawkins Hall from 1-4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and is hosted by SUNY Plattsburghs journalism adjunct Luke Cyphers. Our plan when we headed here this year was to go on a cruise; for some reason lets call it life the plan got put on the back burner until Saturday! We are now booked on a five-night cruise out of Tampa on Carnivals Inspiration. Our ports of call are Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel, with two days at sea. This is only the second cruise I have been on, so needless to say, I am quite excited! After we return Feb. 2, our company begins coming in so we wanted to make sure we got the trip in. Heres hoping winter has returned to my North Country like it or not, my belief is that the cold weather is healthier for all concerned this time of year. Whatever you enjoy this time of year skiing, boarding, skating, sitting by the fire my hope is that this week there will be lots of it! You know the drill .. until next week!
