Catamounts hold on to defeat New Hampshire

BURLINGTON -- Four Catamounts reached double figures at the University of Vermont mens basketball team held off a hard-charging New Hampshire 64-61 on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym. Freshman Evan Fjeld (Durham, N.C.) scored a career-high 14 and junior Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) added 19 as the Cats improve to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in America East play. After a horrendous first half from the floor, UNH climbed back in it and a pair of free throws by Tyrece Gibbs made it 59-58 Vermont with 47 seconds left. Trimboli would answer with a jumper on the other end and after a Wildcat free throw, the junior hit two from the line to put the Cats up 63-59. Mike Christensen hit a lay-up with six seconds left to get New Hampshire back within a bucket. Trimboli was fouled once again but hit only one of two, giving the Wildcats one more chance. Alvin Abreu got a good look at a three, but hit back iron as Vermont would hold on for the victory.
