Snowshoe race slated

SCHROON LAKE The third annual Hoffman Notch Wilderness Challenge snowshoe race will be held Saturday, Jan. 19. Sponsored by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) will start at 11 a.m. Registration will begin that day at 9 a.m. at the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club on Hoffman Road. The $17 entry fee includes medals for the top three competitors in each age class and a spaghetti dinner following the race at the fish & game club. People can also register online at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce website ( www.schroonlakechamber.com ). Demo and loaner snowshoes will be available from Dion Snowshoes. Awards will be presented during the dinner to the top three finishers in various age groups. There will be divisions for walkers and runners. The course starts and finishes on Hoffman Road and loops Big Pond in the Hoffman Wilderness area. Guide John Huston of Northwoods Wilderness Guide Service, the organizer of the event, said the course is not flat, adding that it travels over streams and a beaver dam, and there may be fallen trees on the course. It virtually is a real wilderness, Huston said about the course in the 36,000 acre wilderness area which has few trails. It will be beautiful. The race is a qualifying event for the Empire State Games. Snowshoe running is a booming sport that is gaining attention from both professional and amateur athletes, Huston said.
