Hannaford moves, opens new supermarket in Rutland Town

RUTLAND On Feb. 23 Hannaford Supermarkets donated approximately $250,000 of food to the Vermont Foodbank. The event happen in conjunction with the grand opening of its new, expanded 65,000-square-foot store location in the Green Mountain Shopping Plaza in Rutland Town. Tim Loso, store manager, Rutland Hannaford Supermarket and Doug OBrien, executive director, Vermont Foodbank headed up the event.Four Vermont Foodbank tractor trailers loaded up and carried off approximately 34,000 pounds-or 17 tonsof food from the former Hannaford Supermarket on South Main Street in Rutland. At the same time the grocer celebrates the relocation and grand opening of its new store location just down the road. Hannaford and Vermont Foodbank representatives met at the former Hannaford store, located at 241 South Main S., to load all of the perishable goods, including meat, seafood, bakery, fresh produce and deli items from the old store on to trucks to be donated to the Vermont Foodbank. The donated goods will be distributed to the Vermont Foodbanks 270 network partners: food shelves, food pantries, senior centers, shelters and after-school programs that assist 66,000 Vermonters each year. As the donated food items were loaded on to trucks, the new, expanded Hannaford Supermarket at 318 South Main St. celebrated its grand opening. The new store will have expanded products lines and departments, including a larger selection of meat, produce and deli; natural and organic foods; a small breakfast caf_eaturing breakfast, lunch and dinner items; an expanded floral department; and an expanded selection of health and beauty aids; plus self-scan registers for self-checkout. The new store will employ 205 full- and part-time workers, an increase of 12 percent over the former location. Hannaford Bros. Co., based in Scarborough, Maine, operates 165 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy names. Additional information can be found at www.hannaford.com .
