Winter Carnival comes to town

The 85th annual Middlebury College Winter Carnival, the oldest and largest student-run and only carbon neutral winter carnival in the country, will take place Thursday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 23. The public is invited to attend the ice show, and both Nordic and alpine ski competitions. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, visitors of all ages are invited to attend the Winter Carnival ice show, Middlebury Goes to the Movies. The show features the Middlebury Figure Skating Club, whose members include Middlebury College students, faculty and staff, as well as children and adults from the local community. Brittney Rizo and Mark McAvoy will appear as guest single skaters. Rizo, who trains with the Skating Club of Boston, recently won the bronze medal in the Junior Ladies 2008 United States Championships. McAvoy, a sophomore at Essex High School and member of the Champlain Valley Skating Club, won the New England Regional Championship in the Intermediate Mens competition. The show, which is also hosted by the Champlain Valley Skating Club and sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating, will be performed again at 12 noon on Saturday, Feb. 23. On Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, some of the finest collegiate skiers will compete in Nordic and alpine races that are regional qualifying events for the NCAA. Competitions take place at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl in Hancock and the Rikert Ski Touring Center in Ripton, both located on Route 125.
