Suspended driver arrested for excessive speed

On Feb. 3, Senior State Police Trooper Andrew Leise of theVermont State Police New Haven Barracks arrested Travis G. Popp, born 1978, of Middlebury for Excessive Speed as well as Driving with a Suspended License (fourth offense) in connection with a motor vehicle incident that took place on U.S. Route 7 in the town of New Haven. Senior Trooper Leise observed Popp traveling northbound in New Haven Junction at a high rate of speed. Senior Trooper Leise, who was in a stationary position off the west side of the road activated his radar unit and reveived a speed reading of 74 miles per hour as Popp was traveling northbound in a posted 40-MPH zone. Prior to the motor vehicle stop Popp was observed passing a vehicle at a high rate of speed outside of New Haven Junction as he was traveling north. After Popp was stopped his license was found to be criminally suspended. Popp was taken into custody and transported to The New Haven Barracks for booking. Popp will be required to appear in Addison District Court on March 10 to answer to these charges. Popp has three prior convictions for Driving with a suspended license, eleven prior civil tickets for operating with a suspended license, and currently has 39 active points on his license for various motor vehicle offenses. Popp has been suspended in Vermont since June 2, 2003.
