Inclement weather, ice disrupts ferry service

High winds and shifting ice were the contributing factors to the Grand Isle Ferry closing temporarily overnight Sunday. Visualize all the ice pushing aside until it reached solid ice. There was no where for it to go, said Heather Stewart, operations manager for Lake Champlain Transportation, which operates the ferry. The ferry service was closed at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Ms. Stewart. The ferrys captain went on test runs throughout the night to determine whether or not the ferry was safe for passengers to ride. At 5 a.m., it was decided there was a path cut into the ice the ferry could get through safely. No full loads were taken to start with, as a precaution, said Ms. Stewart. It took longer to cross [the lake], she added. Ms. Stewart, who has worked with the ferry since 1981, said she doesnt remember the last time the ferry service had to be closed down. All three ferries were running again Monday morning, at approximately 7:30 a.m.
