RAVNAH hospice offers volunteer training

RUTLAND - The first is an opportunity to take a free eight-week training class in preparation for becoming a hospice volunteer in the Rutland, Dorset or Manchester communities. This training will begin on March 20, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and continue every Thursday until May 8. Also, sessions will be held at RAVNAH at 7 Albert Cree Drive in Rutland. In the home or in a nursing facility, hospice volunteers provide support to terminally ill patients and their families. In the office, volunteers can assist the hospice program in a variety of ways including special events and clerical support. Included in the training is an introduction to hospice philosophy, education on death, dying and grief, and the development of communication and support skills. Registration is required by March 12. The second opportunity is an invitation to attend a free three-session cooking school program for people with diabetes and their families funded by the Vermont Department of Health. The series will include learning, demonstrations and tasting healthy foods. Session topics include: Desserts: Carbohydrates and sweeteners Main dishes: Fats and sodium Side dishes: Vitamins, minerals and fiber "Dining with Diabetes" features instructors Dianne Lamb, UVM extension nutrition and food specialist, and Donna Hunt, RD, CDE, diabetes nutrition specialist from RRMC's Diabetes Center. The classes are on Feb. 26, March 4 and 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at Grace Congregational Church in Rutland. To enroll, simply call 773-3349 or (800) 281-6977 by Friday.
