BENSON This will be the 36th year for the Great Benson Fishing Derby, which got its start on the ice at Benson Landing in 1973. This is one of the oldest derbies in New England. Six fish categories are in the mix and anglers can fish in all lakes in Vermont, including Lake Champlain. Prizes will be awarded for lake trout, other trout, walleye, northern pike, bass, biggest other fish and a kids category for the best string of three perch. The heaviest lake trout, other trout, walleye, northern pike and bass will net a winning angler $600, while second place brings a $300 cash prize and a third prize of $200. The biggest "other" fish is good for $300. The best string of perch will result in a $50 prize and a plaque for the top five children in the derby. Top prize this year is a 2008 Arctic Cat, worth more than $6,000, will be awarded to the lucky person who holds the right derby ticket. The derby turns all proceeds back to charitable causes. Derby headquarters will be at Crystal Beach, on Route 30 in Castleton. Tickets for the derby are $25 for the derby and raffle, $20 for the raffle alone and $5 for children under 12.
